In the 18th century Chertsey Cricket Club was one of the strongest in the country  and beat the rest of England excluding Hampshire by more than an innings in Narrower parks and allotments, interspersed by relatively few developments, follow this brook upstream through the town centre, which rises a few miles above Virginia Water the actual lake of the same name as the more recent settlement as a whole to its north and south.
